It peered at him like it was never going to stop. Orange, his very own pet, examined his moves as if it was Bendt who was the pet, an unusual eccentric pet who refused to learn any tricks. Bendt didn’t know what to make of it. Was Orange going to suddenly pounce at him? Or give up and walk away? Or worse, give a long lecture on dreams and reality?

One day, at the age of 18, Bendt realised that ideas, otherwise so difficult to catch in the sea of notions, were so much tamer in the world of dreams. They float about unnoticed in real life, but in dreams, they are as real as butterflies in the garden, as strikingly clear like sunlight making patterns on the surface of the water.

Soon after, Bendt put his search for ideas on hold and concentrated on training himself to fall asleep and enter his dreams for days on end. In the beginning, it was difficult to be in one place. A dream that began in a club in London would flow into a room in Delhi, the characters morphed from friends into strangers, objects had a will of their own too and a knife would sometimes cut a wall but the next minute wouldn’t pass through an apple.
